El Arco, the rock arch at Land's End, with desert cliffs behind

Los Cabos

Desert meets ocean at the tip of Baja — a drier, starker Mexico than the Caribbean coast.

Los Cabos looks nothing like the rest of Mexico’s resort coast. It is desert running straight into the Pacific, dry and stark rather than lush, and the light in the evening is worth the trip on its own. Travelers who found Cancún too green and too humid tend to prefer it immediately.

Winter brings the whales. Gray and humpback migrate through from December to April and are visible from shore on a good day, which turns an ordinary resort morning into something a family talks about afterwards. It is also the driest and mildest stretch of the year.

Highlights

  • El Arco, the rock arch at Land’s End
  • Whale watching from December to April
  • A dry desert climate, unlike the Caribbean coast
  • Strong direct flights from the western US

Best time to go: November–April for whale season and the mildest desert heat.
